Chicken, Alaska – Chickenstock Music Festival T-Shirt
Chicken, Alaska — Where the Music Comes on an Army Truck
A gold rush town. A spelling problem. A music festival on the back of a WWII military truck.
Welcome to Chicken, Alaska. Population: not particularly many.
Tucked away along Alaska’s remote Taylor Highway, Chicken began as a gold-mining settlement in the late 1800s. According to local legend, the miners originally wanted to call it Ptarmigan, after the birds they frequently encountered. Unfortunately, nobody could agree on how to spell it.
So they went with Chicken.
A perfectly sensible solution to a problem that probably deserved another five minutes of discussion.
But Chicken’s peculiar history doesn’t end there.
In 2007, a local idea became Chickenstock, a music festival with an appropriately unconventional stage: the back of a World War II-era military truck.
The truck, a Power Wagon 6×6 previously used to haul fuel and supplies into the Alaskan bush, was given a second career in live entertainment. What started with one band performing on the truck eventually became an annual festival drawing music lovers to this tiny, isolated community.
Today, musicians perform on stages built around vintage military trucks, playing everything from bluegrass and country to blues and folk.
Apparently, when you’re miles from the nearest proper concert venue, you bring your own. Preferably with six wheels.
Our Chicken, Alaska T-shirt celebrates this wonderfully unlikely combination of gold rush history, questionable spelling and improvised musical infrastructure.
Featuring a vintage-inspired illustration of a live band performing on a military truck beneath the Alaskan mountains, with a chicken keeping watch from the cab.
Chicken, Alaska. Worth the detour. Even if you can spell Ptarmigan.
An original Temporary Tourist design celebrating real places with stories considerably stranger than their postcards.
