In 1955, the US government built and furnished houses in the Nevada desert. They added sofas, lamps, kitchen appliances and even mannequin families.

Then they detonated an atomic bomb nearby.

Welcome to Operation Cue, a Cold War civil-defence exercise conducted on 5 May 1955 alongside the Apple-2 nuclear test. The idea was to find out what a nuclear explosion would do to ordinary American homes and their contents.

The attention to domestic detail was impressive. The neighbourhood’s long-term prospects were less encouraging.

Our Fully Furnished T-Shirt takes inspiration from the extraordinary contrast between 1950s suburban optimism and atomic-age reality. Featuring a cheerful mid-century living room with a mushroom cloud outside the window, it’s the kind of property advertisement that probably wouldn’t make it past the legal department.

A souvenir for Cold War history enthusiasts, atomic-age design lovers, retro-futurism fans and anyone who appreciates a spectacularly unfortunate housewarming.
