Before humans went around the Moon, two tortoises had already made the trip.

In September 1968, the Soviet Union launched Zond 5 on a mission around the Moon and back.

Its passengers included two steppe tortoises, along with insects, plants and other biological specimens.

On 18 September, the spacecraft passed around the Moon. Three days later, it splashed down in the Indian Ocean. The tortoises survived.

Three months later, Apollo 8 carried the first humans into lunar orbit.

They Went First celebrates one of the Space Race's more unexpected milestones, with a retro space-age illustration of two unlikely lunar pioneers.

A souvenir from 1968, when two tortoises travelled around the Moon before any human had made the journey.
