Thousands of years before modern pet ownership, someone in ancient Mesopotamia was already taking dogs seriously.
A clay tablet from Nippur, in present-day Iraq, preserves an ancient depiction of a dog. It’s a small surviving glimpse of the relationship between people and animals in one of the world’s earliest urban civilisations.
Featuring a Mesopotamian-inspired dog illustration and the line “You Had to Be There,” this design gives an ancient city a souvenir several millennia overdue.
Nippur. You had to be there.
