Japan 1996 – My First Pet Had Batteries T-Shirt

In November 1996, a pet small enough to hang off a keychain went on sale in Japan. It needed feeding, cleaning and attention at the worst possible moments, usually halfway through a test.
Within a year, kids around the world were keeping theirs alive under the desk. Plenty didn't survive a weekend at a friend's house.
Its inventors, Aki Maita and Akihiro Yokoi, later won an Ig Nobel Prize. For economics.
For anyone whose first responsibility came with a low-battery warning.
