On 15 August 1977, a radio telescope in Ohio picked up something rather difficult to explain.
A powerful, narrowband radio signal appeared in the data from the Big Ear radio telescope. It lasted 72 seconds and was never detected again.
A few days later, astronomer Jerry Ehman noticed the extraordinary reading on a computer printout, circled the sequence and wrote one word beside it:
“Wow!”
Nearly half a century later, the signal's origin remains uncertain. Extraterrestrial intelligence? An unusual natural phenomenon? The universe has declined to clarify.
