In 1515, Albrecht Dürer drew a rhinoceros he had never seen.

Working from descriptions and a sketch sent from Portugal, the German artist produced one of history's most famous animal illustrations. His rhinoceros arrived with armour-like plates, elaborate scales and an extra horn. Zoologically questionable. Artistically magnificent.

RHINOCEROS. ALLEGEDLY.

This vintage engraving-inspired design celebrates Nürnberg, 1515, and one of art history's most confidently inaccurate animals.

For art lovers, history enthusiasts and anyone who's ever had to draw something from a rather unreliable description.

Some artistic licence. Quite a lot, actually.
