Roman Emperor Diocletian did something remarkable in AD 305: he voluntarily retired.
He withdrew to his palace near Salona, in present-day Croatia. Later tradition associates his refusal to return to imperial politics with the cabbages he preferred growing.
This design replaces the emperor’s head with a particularly impressive cabbage, giving an ancient retirement story the portrait it deserves.
A better head of state. Diocletian would perhaps have approved.
