They aren’t.
The moai of Rapa Nui, created by the island’s Polynesian inhabitants, are monumental carved figures. Some of the best-known examples at the Rano Raraku quarry have bodies extending beneath the ground, covered by accumulated sediment.
Archaeological excavations have revealed torsos, arms, hands and intricate carvings that casual photographs rarely show.
