According to Gotokuji’s temple legend, a cat beckoned the lord Ii Naotaka through the gate as he returned from falconry. He stopped, escaped a sudden thunderstorm and later supported the temple.

Today, Gotokuji in Tokyo is closely associated with the beckoning cat, or maneki-neko. This illustration brings the cat, temple architecture and flowering branches together in deep blue, cream and red.

A souvenir of a small invitation with lasting consequences. The cat made the introduction. The visitor still had to come inside.
