The Blues — Byzantine Chariot Racing T-Shirt

Team loyalty. Imperial politics. Occasionally a full-scale riot.

Before football clubs, there were chariot racing factions. And in Constantinople, the Blues were a force to be reckoned with.

One of the Byzantine Empire's most powerful racing factions, the Blues commanded fierce loyalty from supporters who packed the Hippodrome to cheer on their teams. This wasn't just sport. Racing rivalries spilled into politics, public life and, occasionally, the streets.

Even Emperor Justinian I was associated with the Blues. But in AD 532, the faction joined forces with its greatest rivals, the Greens, during the infamous Nika revolt. A rare moment of sporting unity with catastrophic consequences.

This vintage-inspired chariot racing crest celebrates the Blues and an era when supporting your favourite team could become a matter of imperial importance.

Wear your colours. The emperor is watching.

Part of the Temporary Tourist Byzantine Chariot Racing Collection. Also available in Green, for those with questionable allegiances.
