For roughly a thousand years, central Europe was home to a political entity with one of history’s most ambitious names: the Holy Roman Empire.
Founded in 962 under Otto I (by the conventional dating), it eventually encompassed hundreds of territories, principalities, duchies, bishoprics and free imperial cities. Its borders shifted, its rulers quarrelled, and its political structure was complicated enough to make modern bureaucracy look positively streamlined.
There was also the small matter of its name.
The Empire claimed a connection to ancient Rome, maintained a complex relationship with the Catholic Church and exercised an authority that varied enormously across its territories.
By the 18th century, philosopher Voltaire famously mocked the Empire for being neither holy, Roman, nor an empire.
